Dulwich Wine Society (DWS)The Dulwich Wine Society was formed in 1991, meeting at 19.30 on Wednesday evenings at the Crown and Greyhound public house 73 Dulwich Village, London, SE21, South London, England.Affectionately known as "The Dog in Dulwich", The Crown and Greyhound was once two establishments, "The Crown" - for the local labourers - and the more dignified "Greyhound" for the gentry. The present unusual name comes from both; the pub's nickname is "The Dog" from the Greyhound. "Dulwich Village" is entirely within the boundaries of the London Borough of Southwark and with the exception of one address near Dulwich Picture Gallery it is completely within the Dulwich Estate. North Dulwich station is near the northern end of Dulwich Village and the P4 minibus passes through the village. At the Dulwich Wine Society tastings, a speaker usually introduces a number of different wines on a theme. In addition to regular contributions from Dulwich Wine Society members, speakers include lecturers, wine merchants and Masters of Wine. Cheese and biscuits are available mid-way through the meeting. There is a membership fee for the 14 week seasonal sessions at a cost of around £45.00 plus an additional cost per evening is £12.00 for members, and £20.00 for non-members (2009 - this includes the talk, all the wines, and refreshments for the evening). If you are thinking of joining the Dulwich Wine Society and wish to sample an evening before committing yourself to the full session, a reduction in membership may be negotiated. There is a recommendation that you take at least two tasting glasses with you. If you are interested and would like further details, please contact the Chairman Colin Wagstaff (020 8402 6587) or the Secretary Tim Havenhand.
